Your Travel Wishes Granted Here

Retirement Reflections

Okay, so it turns out that I can’t actually guarantee your wishes will be granted. But, I can confirm that they will be openly received and shared with the Universe. That’s the next best thing, right?!

Today was the first day of my ‘Travel Writing’ course. Somehow, when I signed up, I thought that I could sit back passively and learn from others. Wrong! Gulp here…there’s homework! Our first assignment is to answer this question, “The Travel Genie grants you three wishes. What are they?”

What, you didn’t know there was a Travel Genie? Me neither! Now that we are privy to this little secret, what would you wish for?

Before you start shouting, “Cheater, cheater pumpkin-eater,” let me explain my intent. I signed up for this course to assist with my blogging. Why not reach out into the blogosphere and ask for your thoughts? To keep it respectable, I promise to submit this post, and the comments generated, with my assignment. I will also share my final version here and give credit to all ideas used.

The sky’s the limit! Futuristic odysseys, spare-no-expense-voyages and travel-à-la-Jetsons are all fair game. Here’s hoping that you are willing to play along.

Prior to retirement, I lived and worked in Beijing China for fourteen years (Middle School Principal/Deputy Director at The Western Academy of Beijing).   2. These are my three travel wishes…..

    1) A completely planned out luxury trip to Italy, focused on food/wine, and art/architecture Hitting all the big must see places (Rome, Venice, The Vatican, the Amalfi coast) with one-on-one travel guides. I just want to show up at the airport and have it all just handed to me!

    2) Greek islands sailboat cruise – captained and crewed by great chef/storyteller.

    3) Combined Galapagos and Machu Picchu small group adventure. This one I’m actually hoping to achieve with a group of women friends …maybe next year.

    is this what you were looking for? Are you going to find themes? Like the fact 2 of mine involve food….and all involve more ancient lands/architecture. Hmm. Definitely looking forward to your results!!

  3. I’m with Kate Crmmons about planes. So I would have that genie zap me to England, my heart’s home. Then I would have the genie arrange for me to stay there long term. Finally, the genie would have to be able to zap my children to visit me any time they wanted. One, two, three. Wish!

  5. Wife #1 was a travel agent, and I took more trips than I ever contemplated or (note:) wanted. Wife #2 is a homebody who loathes even a two hour road trip. So apparently I am experiencing both extremes. If I’m going to do any extensive traveling again, and I do wish to do that, I have to wrap my head around traveling with a real-life “accidental traveler.”

    My wishes then… (1) For foreign trips, namely the UK and France, I’ll need to have a private guide to tote us around, (2) We’d have to travel first class or at least business class, and (3) I desperately want to go back and experience the Hawaiian islands again. – Marty

  6. The strange thing about travel is that someone else’s wish is another person’s everyday life. Even though I am in England I love exploring our little island; hills, coast or cities. So my first wish would be a solar powered camper van to trundle round. 2. I haven’t visited most of the world, I also don’t like planes, so I wish for a modern solar powered airship to glide gently round the world, looking down upon it and tying up anywhere I liked. 3. While i’m waiitng for 1&2 to happen I want to visit all my family in Australia, not flying, cruising round the world one way, than back home the other way.

  7. I’m going to take the easy way out and just say “I’ll have what Pat’s having!” because those trips all sound great, and I’m too tired to think right now 🙂

    Except for this one wish – I’d like to explore the off-the-beaten track but scenic back roads of the world in an electric-powered hippy van with all the bells and whistles. It will be magically transported from continent to continent and island to island until I’ve visited them all (except Antarctica – no roads there). And I’ll be perfectly safe everywhere I go.

  8. A good question, Donna! This is how I like to begin when I want to buy some time since I don’t have an immediate answer:)

    Kudos to you, Donna for taking this course. Thank you for sharing parts of it with us:)

    I am still basking in the glow from our last travels this year, two months in New Zealand. It was an amazing trip although itineraries, booking arrangements, and the actual driving was often very challenging.

    It would be nice to have a future trip where all the arrangements and transportation became the responsibility of a reputable travel company.

    Or even the best of both worlds. A guided trip plus a trip where we venture off on our own.

  9. OK … so this is going to be long. If you had asked me that question 2 years ago, my answer would have been to go to Alaska and volunteer for the Iditarod. After my mom passed in October ’17, I started planning just that. Now I can say I have spent 7 weeks of the last 2 winters enjoying all the things I dreamed about doing in Alaska in the winter time. Now, I am trying to decide whether I need to go for #3.

    Last spring I fulfilled a dream I didn’t even know I had. After getting an invitation to “Tasty Tunes and Funky Food” – a cooking and songwriting workshop in Maine with two of our great middle level friends – the wheels started turning. On the way to and from Maine and while there, I visited 2 of my former middle school students, 6 great middle level colleagues (some of my heroes), a teacher whose students collaborated with my middle level kids, another friend, and a cousin. I also dropping in at The Blue Bunny, bookstore of author/illustrator and creative encourager Peter Reynolds. (A Bucket List item) While I was up north, I also visited 3 Canadian Atlantic provinces (New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia).

    …. so that is lots of dreams come true. Now, probably the biggest “wish” is to see the Aurora. How can a person spend 7 weeks in the winter in Alaska and not see the lights! Yes, I know. But my friend I met while volunteering also took a “bear adventure” last fall to many places that have bears. She ended up in Churchill Manitoba in November with the polar bears. You have to see the lights there, right? That place is known for showing the lights even in late summer. NOPE! Her plumbing in her RV froze while she flew to Churchill, but no lights. Where/when will I – we, my lights chasing friends and I – get to see them?

    The other two wishes are to go on my “visit my friends” trips to both Michigan and Florida. My Michigan trip will include a visit with a former president of NMSA, one of my grad school roommates who is now an artist way north in Michigan, one of the key members of MiddleTalk – Cossondra George, who lives in the UP, and my freshman college roommate – who spends her summers on a farm in Michigan and her winters in North Carolina with her beau she met while doing the C2C bicycle tour across the country. They now work for C2C and other bike tours around the country.

    My Florida trip will go down one coast all the way to the “end” and up the other visiting with former students and college roommates/suitemates

    1. Hi, Rebecca – Thank you for your extremely thoughtful answer. The Iditarod and the Northern Lights are currently VERY high on my Travel Wish List. Fulfilling a dream that you never realized that you had is pretty amazing. In a way, writing has been like that for me — it was like connecting with a part of me that was silently waiting to come to life.

  10. Sounds like a perfect class for you, Donna. My top travel wish is a visit to Tuscany. I feel in love with the area the first time I watched Under the Tuscan Sun. Second on my list would be Costa Del Sol. Finally, my true dream is a week at any beach to just read. Good luck with the course!

  11. I’ll take the folding of time and space option to avoid the 17+ hr plane flights from Australia to Europe or the US/Canada! My next dream trip would be a Mediterranean cruise – Barcelona to Venice sounds nice – small cruise ship and gorgeous weather (no giant ocean liners – I’m a small cruise girl!) I also love those bicycle barge/river cruises too – best memories from those trips.

  13. Hi Donna! What a fun idea. Good for you for signing up for something interesting, not knowing exactly what it might mean. As for me I would LOVE the StarTrek idea of a transporter so I could beam anywhere in the world (or galaxy) at will. Then my second wish would be to find others of like mind to sit and enjoy…conversation, experiences and yes, a bit of dancing. As for the third wish,….transporting to unique and gorgeous natural wonders. If I could do that when traveling…ah, that would be awesome. 🙂 ~Kathy

  15. Ahhh my kind of post. First off, great you are taking a writing course as its always wonderful to learn new things and get insights, even if you DO have to do homework.

    Okay…

    1) I would LOVE to do a trip to Africa. I was born in South Africa, but while growing up we were banned from travelling anywhere else in Africa due to apartheid, so that has become a dream trip for me. Safari with Ben, who has never been and new parts of Africa

    2) Mongolia for the wide open spaces and nature and the nomadic people

    3) Iran ~ not now though with an American passport 😦 but would love to go for the culture, history and overall beauty…

    Ahhhh I could keep going but thats the top three on my current wish list…

  16. Sounds like a fun course for you! My 3 would be – One, that they’d hurry and start manufacturing the SkyCar that will hold 2 people so we could fly to see our grandbabies whenever we wish. Two, that hubby would hurry up and retire so we can travel via motorhome across the US, up into Canada, and of course over to Alaska, all at an unhurried and leisurely time. Three, to again have that SkyCar available to quickly fly us to our home away from home on the shores of Orange Beach in Alabama.

  17. Your course sounds fun. I hope you pass on some tips. We will be taking a cruise to Leningrad in a couple of weeks which was one of my dreams. As a child I visited Vienna station and watched all the trains leaving for stations behind the iron curtain and I wanted to see the places for myself.

    I would love to see the Northern lights without getting cold and also Alaska. I have an underactive thyroid gland so don’t handle extremes of temperature well.

  18. Hey Donna, your course sounds like a lot of fun. Love the idea of having three wishes, so many places to go. For me, as we’re due to get our new van next month, I’d love to do a complete lap of Australia with no time constraints, right up to the tip, across the Kimberley’s and down the west coast.
    Overseas, I’ve always wanted to go to Canada and the Rockies and as for some chill out time I’d love to head across to Lord Howe Island. Ooh, so many other places I’d love to visit but all in good time I guess. Enjoy the travel writing! 😊

  19. That sounds like a fun class! My dream trip would be to Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. I’ve been talking about it for years and have read 3 books set there. I think we will go there once the nest is empty, maybe for a big anniversary. Good luck with your assignment!

  20. This is actually a challenging assignment that requires a lot of thought. The transponder thing was certainly the first thought that popped into my head. The process of getting from one spot to another is definitely my least favourite part of travelling – unless a bike or boat is involved 😉

    I’ve been lucky to have travelled extensively but my wish list of destinations is still impossibly long. Dream trips would be to go north of the Arctic Circle for both the longest and shortest day of the year, and to go south to the Antarctica.

  22. Well, my first wish would have to be three more wishes, Donna. How fun that you are taking this course! I bought some how-to travel writing books years ago before blogging became what it is, but didn’t do much with it. Hard to travel as a single parent with two busy daughters. Hubby found out yesterday that he can retire in 2-3 years and we’ve been talking about moving to the Spokane area then. In the meantime, my 3+ wishes would be more road trips with the trailer, Germany for a Christmas and all expense paid trip to Tahiti! Enjoy your course!

  23. What a fun course and great question! Since these are wishes, I’m going to assume magic is involved… so:

    1) Beam me up, Scotty. Although I love road trips, sometimes I would like to be transported to a destination (especially one overseas). I’m not fond of air travel.
    2) Crowd control. So many people are traveling to the same destinations at the same time. My second wish would be to remove a good portion of the tourists wherever I am traveling.
    3) Lost in translation. My third wish is that I become instantly fluent in the language of whatever country I’m traveling in. We English speakers are lucky that so many people speak at least a little bit of our language but I think our travel experience could be so much richer if we could converse in their language.

    1. Hi, Janis – I like your wishes! I wholeheartedly agree that our travel experiences are enhanced when we can speak at least some of the local language. For our recent trip to Italy, even my minuscule Italian made a huge difference. Sadly, that vocabulary is quickly fading!

  26. I’m loving all the “Beam me up, Scotty!” type wishes – or maybe the seven-league boots of the old fairytales would do. Of things that might actually come true: 1. When a certain person retires, embark on a grand tour of the U.K. visiting all our friends and relatives (whether they want us to or not). I include blogging friends in this – we could then extend that worldwide. Obviously. 2. Visit both poles. 3. Visit everywhere else I haven’t mentioned yet. Ok, I have strayed back into the realms of fantasy!

  27. Have fun on the writing course, Donna!
    I must assume that as a genie is granting wishes, the wishes don’t necessarily need to be realistic. So….
    1. A ‘Wardrobe’ type holiday (as in ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’). I would love to be able to have a long break somewhere and then come home to my garden just as it was when I left; my mother wouldn’t miss me and I needn’t worry about her while I’m gone and the summer would just go on and on for ever.
    2. Assured energy and good health during the whole trip away. I never have enough energy to do all the things I want to do when I’m abroad. Also, I am always unwell for some part of the holiday and that is not only unpleasant for me but a burden for my family.
    3. I would like to make sure my husband doesn’t worry/panic/fret/regret for the whole time we are away. I probably wouldn’t recognise a thoroughly chilled husband and might find the time hangs heavily if I’m not having to comfort/reassure him. 😀 That’s hardly likely!
    I have no special destination wishlist. Most places are fun and interesting and they are made special if I’m with the ones I love.

Hi Donna – My three wishes: 1) More peace and less violence in the world so we can travel everywhere without safety concerns 2) Quicker and more convenient transportation from one destination to another, and a clothing essential kit waiting for me at each destination so I don’t need to pack clothes 3) A hop on hop off round-the-world trip that include all the continents to visit my family and friends and places that are new-to-me.   29. I envy you for doing this course. It will be so interesting and rewarding. And, maybe you’ll get hooked on becoming a travel writer. What a fun first assignment. I assume you’d have to expand your answers instead of just a list of three single-word wishes? And, how fun to read what your followers have in mind. Very interactive stuff, Donna! 🙂

    My three wishes? I can’t really give destinations, because there are far too many favorites, except if I could sum up three planets, starting with the earth. 🙂

    1) positive attitude to deal with anything that comes my way during my travels

    2) good health to never have to visit doctors in foreign countries and to be able to climb hills and mountains without headaches

    3) the ability and talent to write engaging articles and/or take professional photos to make a decent living, so I can keep traveling forever

    1. To have the ability to time travel
    2. To always be able to get back safely to the time and place where I time travelled from
    3. Upon my death, to be able to pass on the ability to time travel to one other person

  32. My travel wishes are 1) to travel to Machu Picchu without having to bother with altitude acclimation, 2) have the ability to photograph everything cool and still be present 100% of the time, and 3) have a personal luggage carrier!!

      Investing heritage is such a cool travel endeavour. Even though I have traced a good chunk of my family tree (on Ancestry.com), I’m still not sure I would know where to begin these travels.

    Reading some of the posts and dreaming about all of the suggestions is almost as much fun as being there.
    1. Banff and the Canadian Rockies has always been on my list and I am booking that trip right now for next summer as well as a slow drive down the Oregon Coast towing our fifth-wheel.
    2. A lovely cottage just above the shore in St. Barth’s. I want friends to visit (sometimes) along with an occasional visit from the fisherman bringing me the fresh catch for the day.
    3. A long voyage in a smooth sailing vessel that docks in tiny ports of the Greek Isles. I want to sample wine, eat calamari, and watch every sunset.

    My list isn’t as creative as some of your readers, but I’m not hard to please…

  35. I often say that I want to go to Italy to eat, so (1) unlimited time at Debbie Travis’ retreat and cooking lessons would suit me fine. (2) travel Alberta and attend all the summer music festivals (3) BC salmon fishing. More than one person has mentioned the northern lights. I can see them from my back porch, reminding me to appreciate what is at hand.

    Of course, mine are all about the water.
    1. Narrowboat cruise through the canals in the UK…with the aforementioned immediate beaming over from US to UK with no international plane travel. Not a keen flyer.
    2. Cruising Greek Isles…with a competent guide to make sure we see everything and who does all the advance work so I don’t have to.
    3. Sailing among the Channel Islands in Washington State. Again, would prefer my own boat but someone would have to beam it there so we wouldn’t have to trailer it all that way from Florida.

  37. Well, since it is a genie with magical powers, I would like to travel all 50 United States in a chauffeur-driven luxury motorhome. After that, I’d like an international travel pass that allows me to travel anywhere in the world using local guides that can show me all the local customs and favorites. With that, I’m not sure I need a third wish, but since I have one, I’d go with the teleporting–no airplanes necessary idea. That was fun! Thanks Donna.

  38. I’d like tele-transportation to get to places in a thrice and no more long plane trips – or jetlag please! I’d like to be zapped to Europe for a month’s slow train travel, to Norway for a cruise, and to New Zealand for a month long campervan holiday. #MLSTL

  40. Ohmigosh, what a brilliant idea! I like your instructor very much! Thank you for inviting us to share our wishes. I cannot fly so my dreams all involve train/boat travel within Canada. First two are east-coast dreams – a week of photography, exploration and relaxation on Fogo Island at the beautiful Fogo Island Inn. The second dream, one I’ve had since my youth, is a week of kayaking, camping and photography at Gros Morne. The third dream is a week at Tofino. Just imagine the images I could capture there!   41. This is such a great question to pose. I think my wishes change daily! 3 travel destination wishes…ok, here goes 1) backpack the entire Appalachian trail (this will never happen, but I like to dream about it!), 2) spend 40 days hiking the Camino de Santiago, 3) dive in Indonesia

    3 travel wishes: 1) that I could blink and be there 2) if 1 is not possible, then make coach seats extremely comfortable 3) get rid of jet lag!

    PS. U are the second person this week I found who has gone to either a blogging or writing class. I’m getting the nudge to see if I can find one in Colorado!!

      2. That’s so true, Pam. The Caminos are addictive. They should come with a warning!! My husband and I walked our first Camino in 2010 from Tui, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. In 2016, we walked from St. Jean Pied de Port, France to Najara, Spain. In 2017 we walked from Najara to Santiago de Compostela and then on to Muxia and Finisterre. This past summer we walked the Via Francigena from Luca to Rome. If you ever find yourself with nothing else to do, search either Camino or Via Francigena on this site and you can find a few highlights from our adventures. 🙂

    1. More travel using less fossil fuel since we have used so much in the past.
    2. To have the courage to travel alone in the future

  45. Love all of the discussion your post has generated. What a fun course this must be. I know you will be very successful at it.

    Can I use one of my 3 wishes for someone else? My ex-husband’s aunt needs medical help that she needs and cannot get in her home country of Panama. Her sister, here in the U.S. has tried everything to bring Damiana here with no luck. So could the genie please make it possible for her to come to the U.S. for medical care?

    Then, please may I have all of my family meet for a week beach-side. Doesn’t have to be a glamorous, touristy beach. It can be a humble beach like Galveston. Just sand, salt water and family. Maybe a remote beach in Panama so my girls can see the country from where their father’s family came.

    Finally, could the genie please grant PC and me the opportunity to travel to Great Britain to see from where our families originally came? England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. And if possible, could we fly out of the U.S. via NYC to see Ground Zero and then a quick stop in Boston to see my childhood home?

  46. I’m a little late to this, so you’ve probably written your homework assignment by now, but I’ve enjoyed reading all the comments here. Everyone has great travel wishes, but for me personally, it’s the travelling by, ‘Beam me up Scotty’ transporter which I’d be rubbing my genie lamp for 😊 also this transporter would have to be free or very few pennies of course, oh and no carbon print! I don’t wish for a lot do I?! 😂

  47. Donna, my first inclination was to answer the question with a list of places I want to go and things I want to do there. Of course, there are many more than 3 on this list: visit L. M. Montgomery’s house at Cavendish, PEI (PEI is the only Canadian province I have not been to); take a cooking course in the south of France or Tuscany; go on a Plein air painting tour in the south of France or Tuscany; hike to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro; soak in a hot spring in Iceland; do a camping tour of New Zealand; hike to Machu Picchu; tour the pyramids in Egypt; go helicopter skiing in northern B.C. (e.g., the mountains near Bell II., etc., etc.

    But then I though about this tricky question more, and decided a better set of wishes is: 1. To have enough time left in my life to go everywhere that I would like to travel, and 2. To have enough money to be able to travel everywhere I would like to go (not for extravagant travel, but just comfortable travel), and 3. To retain good health that will permit active travelling for years to come.
