After a crazy busy spring, summer and early autumn, November unfolded far better than I had hoped. It offered a tranquil pace that I had yearned for, granting me the luxury of sleeping in my own bed every single night for the first time in over six months.

Adding to the relaxation, Richard surprised me by preparing dinners three nights a week. And to think, for a good chunk of our marriage, I didn’t even know that he could cook! #itsgoodtoasktherightquestions.

Still, there was quality time with friends.

And weekly outings with this familiar face.

There was much cozy reading in front of the fireplace. Okay, I didn’t usually have my red shoes on, but it did make a fun photo! Besides, I wanted to see if you were paying attention.

Although I didn’t do much hiking, I indulged in frequent local beach and neighborhood walks, savouring the diverse colours of autumn. The allure of mountains and water never fades. Although Richard, who grew up in BC, always asks what I am looking at when I stare in awe at the scenery!
And then, as if to prepare me for December, the pace of the past nine days revved up drastically. There was Bunco on Wednesday, the Qualicum Beach Evening Christmas Market on Thursday, Tom Lavin & the Powder Blues on Friday, more High Tea with Deb on Saturday morning (because we wanted to try out another local place…and we are firm believers that you cannot get enough of a good thing), granddaughter time on Saturday afternoon, Christmas decorating on Sunday, a video call with blogging friends on Tuesday, Christmas Charity Breakfast on Wednesday (see below) and our dog-walking group as well as this post going live today. But somehow, with the quietude of the earlier days this month, the busier days brought perfect balance.

While mentioning events from this past week, I’d like to give a shout-out to Parksville’s 15th Annual Toy Drive. Fully hosted by Tigh Na Mara Seaside Resort in partnership with several local businesses, media outlets and Parksville’s Society of Organized Services (SOS), this drive provides a complimentary all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet to everyone bringing an unwrapped toy, gift card or money donation to support families in need this holiday. Richard and I had early appointments yesterday morning, so we got to this event as soon as it opened at 6 am. Volunteers could not have been more welcoming. They were each beaming with pride at all that was being accomplished. Last year’s event hosted more than 1,000 guests with an equal number of toys donated. This year’s drive brought in cash donations totalling $30,000 as well as 2,500 gifts.During our visit, we reconnected with an old friend and engaged in captivating conversations with those seated near us. A win-win all around! Also worthy to note, last year’s event occurred during a snowstorm at -1C (30F), while this year brought dry, unseasonally warm weather at 6C (42.8F) rising to 9C (48.2F). For comparison, check out the bottom two photos, each captured from our living room window.

How was your November? I’m eager to hear about your experiences.

My November was pretty peaceful too leading up to Thanksgiving. Now it’s starting to crank up but in a good way. Love all your pictures! Such good looking food! (and grands!)

Hi, Kate – I”m delighted to read that you also had a peaceful November (leading up to Thanksgiving).
Thanks for your kind words about our granddaughters. We think they are absolutely beautiful inside and out! (No prejudice on our parts whatsoever). 😀

Sounds like a wonderful November to me. It appears Richard is healing well. At least well enough to cook up some great meals. Last year’s picture is prettier but this year’s picture is more my style. Have a magical December.

Hi, Darlene – This year’s view from my living room is also more my style. Last year, Richard and I donned our ice cleats/snow grips, bundled up, and walked the 4.4 kms to the breakfast. It took us well over an hour. Absolute fools we were. Wisely, we accepted a ride back home! 😀

A husband who cooks is a treasure! And those red shoes! 😍

Hi, Carol – For years and years I was absolutely convinced that Richard could not cook. Then in our retirement, he began offering to chop veggies for meal prep. I wondered how in the heck he had such advanced knife skills when he could not cook. Right then and there I should have asked way better questions. 😀

A lovely month indeed – with plenty to be thankful (and grateful) for. Well done on the charity drive and I adore that pic of you with the shoes.

Okay, now you caused me to tumble down another rabbit hole (easy to do, I know).
I had to stop and ensure that I really knew and could articulate the difference between being thankful and being grateful. According to Dr. Google,
“By definition, thankfulness is feeling pleased and relieved. Gratefulness is showing appreciation for something done or received. Being thankful is more about expressing a feeling like saying ‘thank you’ when someone holds open a door.”
Makes perfect sense when said that way. ❤

Isn’t it amazing how comforting it is to sleep in our own beds? One of my favorite things about my husband retiring last year is he spends a lot of time in the kitchen now instead of just me. 🙂 So I get your joy at your husbanding preparing some dinners–men can be great cooks too. lol. I love the red shoes!

Thanks, Lisa – Ironically, many of the beds that I slept in earlier this year were newer, fancier, larger more expensive, etc. etc. Still, not even one of them matched the sheer comfort of my own! ❤

I’m glad you had a wonderful November, Donna! You and Richard keep quite busy in your area with fun events and friends and family. My thoughts went somewhere for a moment as I saw you reading with your red pumps on…great photo! Congrats on helping raise $ for such a worthy cause. I believe both of us experienced a crazy early winter last year. Love your autumn clicks, truly gorgeous! Cheers to a fun but slightly peaceful December!

Thanks, Terri – So far, our beginning weeks of December look that they might indeed be fairly peaceful. This will all come to a crashing halt when Son#4 arrives from Hong Kong on December 23, then all four sons, three DILs, three grandchildren and two granddogs arrive in a steady flow right after that. I am greatly looking forward to it all. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season ahead!

Hi Donna! So glad to hear you’ve had a wonderful November filled with friends, family, GOOD food, scenery and all sorts of things! As for Thom and I we are busy remodeling and getting settled here in Tucson. Much busier than we expected but we’ve made tons of progress so when we return in January we can relax a bit. If you get too cold up there, come to Tucson for a visit! ~Kathy

That sounds like a wonderful November! And I’m aghast at you not knowing Richard could cook – well, not at you, at him. Fancy not letting on!

Hi, Anabel – The slightly longer version of this story is that twice in Beijing Richard agreed to make dinner and each time he made a ‘creative pasta.’ Both of these dishes turned out so horribly (although I tried hard not to let on about this) that even the dog refused to eat them (and our dog at the time was a Lab so that’s saying something). After that I laid off and just assumed he could not cook. I couldn’t have been more wrong about that! And as they say, better late than never!

Your life is full & you make it eventful. Like you, I aimed for a NOvember & that worked until news of a cousin’s death mid-month with her funeral 5 hrs away. Then my SIL fell & broke her hip requiring pinning so that’s taken up some time tending to her. My circle is at the age where we can no longer joke about falling & breaking a hip! One of my missions in life is to stay active to prevent such mishaps. I started regular walks again but only get in ~8km/wk not per hike. I tend to my mom at her lodge setting 2-3 times per week & the process for LTC placement is underway, another step in her end of life care. The highlight of the month was hosting a Home Routes house concert this past Tuesday. Nothing like live music right in your own home. And as the predecessor host said – it’s a reason to clean the house & cook something nice. I need a Richard. I do alright in the kitchen & made a batch of pyrogies for the freezer. Tonight I’ll be making some no-fail fudge & cranberry snack cookies for the bake sale at the lodge. The day-to-day little things are punctuated by the big events & it all contributes to a full life.

Hi, Mona – I am so sorry to hear about your cousin’s death and your sister-in-law’s broken hip. Sending warm thoughts your way.
Staying active at any age, especially ours, is so important. It matters less how far we walk, but that we regularly get out there and ‘do it.’ I am a firm believer if we don’t use it, we’ll too quickly lose it!
Your Home Routes concert sounds awesome, as does that batch of pyrogies. Once again, I wish I lived next door! ❤

Hi, Ann – Thanks for dropping by. Although I have been grateful to be able to enjoy our unseasonable warm autumn, I do continue to worry about the climate change behind it. Parksville is currently predicted to have an unusually dry winter. Although that also sounds good on the surface, it would carry many devastating consequences. 😦

Your November sounded like a lovely mix of comfort and friends. I laughed when I read that you were grateful to sleep in your own bed all month. Because of our road trip to Arizona in November, I “got to” sleep in an assortment of beds. Although that’s just the way it is when you travel (and we don’t want to stop traveling), there really isn’t anything like being in your own nest, is there?

Hmmm, the shoes definitely got my attention – just the right shade of red. I like that in a lip color too. I like all of Richard’s meals as everything pictured there are staples in my own kitchen. Funny you didn’t know he cooked. I would have thought he’d have played that talent up during your courtship! The friends gatherings look fun and festive – a prelude of things to come in December.
November seemed to fly by, with the highlight being our visit to Canada which I wrote about last week, so no monthly wrap-up for me this week. December is another story entirely, with a full calendar and little time to execute it all with grace – but I will try. First thing on my list is to find a pair of those shoes!

Donna,
I’m still chuckling over your Lab that turned down Richard’s “pasta creation.” When Helen and I first married, I tried to impress her with a meal of Tuna Helper. It was so bad I was relieved of cooking duties for many years after that. On the other hand, the food spreads in this post are so inviting that I would almost consider them works of art. I noticed the red shoes but was also drawn to your book. The few sentences shared there are intriguing. Would you share what you were reading? I added my monthly wrap-up to the link share and look forward to reading the others. Have a blessed start to your December. Joe

Hi, Joe – I love how deeply you read the comments. That’s very impressive. And the comment section is always the favourite part of my posts.
