What’s (Typically) On My Plate

For last month’s WOYP, I showcased a variety of the meals and snacks that we had eaten while in Banff and surrounding area. If you caught that post, it brightly displayed heavily cheesed pizzas (yup, more than one), a variety of meat dishes and a very decadent marshmallow donut (that honestly was Creighton’s).

Not to give anyone the wrong impression, I thought I would show you what Richard and I typically eat. So, for the past two weeks (when I thought about it), I took a quick snap of our meals. If a picture truly is worth a thousand words, there’s an entire novel below!

As with shopping, it may be best not to read this post while hungry. 😀

And of course, there was my cohost’s birthday celebration. So much fun!

Recipes (when I used one) can be found here:

Farmers’ Market Greek Salad
Mediterranean Sole
Salmon and Asparagus Sheet Pan Dinner
Lemony Baked Basa
Baked Halibut
Greek Pasta Salad
Bow Thai Soup (I used a package from our local Seafire Soups and made it meatless)
Strawberry-Blueberry Smoothie
Shakshuka (plus more info here and here)

So, what’s typically on your plate? Do you have a favourite ‘go-to’ dish? Please share (with the recipe/direcitons).

  1. Hi Donna – that looks a lovely celebratory time with Deb. While every time you post about food I think back to my days on Vancouver Island and the easy availability of delicious fish, veg and fruits. I’ve just started making cold soups … otherwise lots of recipes similar to yours – though am not a breakfast eater – never have been. Love fresh fruit though – cheers Hilary

  2. Well that’s certainly cooking the rainbow in all its colourful glory Donna. I can see why you and Richard both look like you’ll live forever. We went to see Where the Crawdads Sing yesterday and enjoyed it too (it definitely helped that we’d both read the book).

      1. I turned off comments for the month of July because I was away and wouldn’t be able to respond. Back home and cooking and comments have returned. Thanks for reaching out.

  4. I’m smiling at your worry that we readers would think you often have marshmallow donuts and cheese pizzas nightly. 🙂 No worries, we all know what delish meals you prepare at home. But I so appreciate the photos/colors/recipes here. We haven’t gone completely meatless, but most meals at home are salmon (baked with a mayonnaise/dill topping with baked potato and steamed asparagus) or grilled chicken with yam and fresh spinach or tilapia (baked again with a parmesan topping) or fresh pasta with some kind of spaghetti sauce in which I also sauté mushrooms and red peppers (I like Rao’s sensitive-free sauce, since my guy is allergic to garlic!). Sometimes on a hot night we’ll have a spinach/tomato quiche. Truly, all simple meals. I guess I should mention my easy mac & cheese casserole too. 🙂 xo

  5. Yum!!! What a veritable rainbow of delights in your meals, Donna! And I loved my birthday outing with you and Richard! I will be coming back to this post for the recipe links once the dust settles on my move. Right now my favourite “dish” is emptying out the fridge/freezer so I have less to cart to my new place 🤣.

  6. Donna,
You were right…shouldn’t have read this while hungry. Everything looks scrumptious and colorful. Not familiar with Basa. Please educate me. I’m off to prepare lunch! Joe

    1. Hi, Joe – Basa is a white fish similiar to cod or haddock – but is less expensive. We don’t have it often – but it was on sale in one of our shops so I thought that i would give it a try. It worked well. You would likely find it is your frozen fish section.

  7. All the summer time vibes in your photos! After so long being away I bet it felt great to be eating normal at home! We still eat all meat but source it locally and mix it up lots. Think my post will be the unhealthy one this month! Bernie

  8. I love summer meals with all the colorful fresh fruit and veggies available (some in our back yard 🙂 ). We love salmon and asparagus too (although later in the summer we substitute a different vegetable when asparagus tend to get chewy). It’s such an easy and yummy meal.

  9. Lovely lovely food! I’m not as good at taking photos of what we eat but like you, we’ve been tending to more plant based meals with less meat and more fish. It started out due to hubby’s health orders but now it’s my preference. I do envy having a regular farmers market to shop. While I love buying through our food guild, there’s nothing like seeing & selecting from fresh produce on display!

  10. It’s great to let our hair down on holidays and enjoy eating food we normally wouldn’t. However, I also like to come back home and to my normal pattern of eating. Loved all of your tasty recipes. We have reduced the amount of meat we eat and have always enjoyed fish, especially salmon which is a regular on our menu and so good for us. Sorry I can’t partake in #whatsonyourplateblogchallenge but hopefully will be here next month, cooking from my new home. xx

  11. The dinner in the park with the mini stove sounds like a fun way to beat the heat and have a great meal

And reading about the Indian cuisine for WBA b-day reminded me how much I like Indian cuisine – it had been a while

    1. Hi, Yvette – Like many in our area, we do not have air conditioning because we so seldom need it. But on the few days that it does get hot — it can get very hot (at least for us). That’s when living close to the beach is extra handy.
If you haven’t had Indian Food for awhile, I highly recommend it. Indian Food is one of my all time faves!

      1. It is probably a gift to not be in AC all the time….
And a few years ago I used to buy packs of Indian food an Amazon – I’m the only one in the fam that likes it – and not sure if you have seen the various meals – but they come in foil pouches and were so good –
Hope you have a nice day

  12. All looks simply scrumptious Donna! Salmon is very expensive here in SA. I prefer the wild not farmed one. I treat myself from time to time. (Oh, nearly forgot my husband, I treat him too.)
Have a wonderful weekend. Will check your recipes later 🦋

  14. Your meals look delicious and made me think about how I eat. The menu is quite often driven by the seasons and what’s on sale at the store. The garden is producing now so there has been new potatoes (from the neighbors), fresh beans & peas, onions. Of course, those vegetables were creamed for a seasonal treat. Pasta salads filled with vegetables (beans, corn, peppers, carrots) are in steady rotation in the summer. Stir fries served over rice or noodles is in regular rotation. Cooked breakfasts with bacon & eggs are company fare while I usually enjoy toast with cheese/tomato or a boiled egg. I eat tomatoes & cheese daily. I eat less & less red meat. There are more meatless meals and fish including trout & pickerel (from my fishermen friends). I enjoy an “appetizer” meal with crackers, cheese, sausage, pickles, raw vegetables. I realize that my meals are pretty carb heavy. You are what you eat, Donna, as evidenced in your svelte physique. I’m more body by bacon!

  15. All of these dishes look heavenly, Donna. There’s nothing like getting back to some health home-cooking after a period of indulgence. I have been trying my hand at a couple new recipes a week since retirement–with reasonable success. Do you have favorite sources for recipes, or are you winging it?

    1. Hi, Christie – I’ve never been good at following a recipe precisely. For new dishes, I tend to look at several different recipes for that meal and kinda blend them. 🙂 That being said, I find that Chatelaine Magazine offers very reliable recipes…and they are always free online!

  16. These dishes completely inspire me. I get ready-made meals delivered to my care home most days, but I occasionally do cook a meal and put some leftovers in the freezer for when the meal service doesn’t offer any meals I like. I also love making smoothies. Really should be making one soon again.

  18. Hi Donna, your plates look yummy and very healthy. Vince and I are trying to eat healthier. Our favorite go to is either chicken or salmon with rice and either broccoli or asparagus. I like combining angel hair pasta with any number of cooked vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, spinach with a touch of basil. Of course there is some parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Ju-Lyn – I like smoothies but don’t have them very often. Yesterday I read some negative literature about green smoothies (re: oxalate overload….). The article was also down on chocolate for the same reason. However, the literature will definitely not stop me from indulging in either! 😀
