What’s Been On Your Calendar – January 2023?

New Beginnings:

I love the start of the new year. It is full of hope and promise. That makes it an excellent time to focus on how we would like our year to flow. As we are almost an entire month in, it’s also a perfect time for reflection and sharing. So here are my first 26 days of January from three different views.

Photographic View:

Key Areas of Focus:

Yoga With Adrienne (#ywa). Early in the pandemic, I got into the habit of doing a short video workout first thing each morning (landing on my yoga mat before I was fully awake so that I couldn’t talk myself out of it). Last month, I used this time to follow the (free) Madfit December Workout Challenge. Although I found it strenuous, I enjoyed it and learned a few new things. (Rolling plank, anyone?) For this month, I decided to follow the (also free) Yoga with Adrienne 30-Day Challenge. Numerous friends from around the world have also joined in, which has been a lovely bonus.

Mom Time: From January 4 – 11, Richard and I visited my mother and step-father in Kelowna to celebrate Christmas, New Year and my mom’s 92nd birthday. It was wonderful quality time for which I am immensely grateful.

More Family Time – We were also able to sneak in extra visits with three of our four sons, our DILS, all of our grandchildren and two out of three granddogs. We are currently planning a spring visit to Hong Kong to visit Son #4 and Granddog #2.

Calendar View:

What kind of calendar do you rely on? Phone? Computer? Paper? Dayplanner? I use the first three, but often rely on my paper calendar which resides on our fridge. Old school, I know!

Word Cloud Visual:

Since rediscovering Wordcloud for my last post, I was reminded how easy it is to plug in whatever you have been writing and have Wordcloud instantly highlight key themes in a cute visual. For this post, I cut and pasted my January calendar entries, blog posts and other writing that I have done this month to see what it would look like. Once again, I loved it. The focus on my mom, and my yoga challenge, quickly showed through. Richard received an honourable mention (although he thought his name should have been even larger)!

Word of the Year (WOTY):

I mentioned in a previous post that I decided to go with a Pocket WOTY for 2023. It is similar to a regular WOTY but is not shared publicly so that the focus remains on private reflection. Often the skeptic, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this has been working. I was also delighted that Wordcloud quickly picked up on my WOTY theme. Wordcloud is truly one smart cookie!

    1. Hi, Jacqui – Your comment made me smile…and made me relook at my calendars. I was afraid to show my paper calendar because I thought that people would think that it was boring. I’ve got a few bigger things coming up the last couple days of January but I took the “been” of this challenge seriously so thought that I would save them for the next WBOYC post. I hope that you will drop by then as well (greedy, I know)~!

  1. I loved the photographic view of your month Donna and your Wordcloud visual – it says it all! You are one busy lady. I also rely on my online diary, blog diary and brain space but the calendar on the bench is the main one for me – very similar to yours on the fridge 🙂 I really enjoyed your first #WBOYC post for 2023 as it’s literally what’s on your calendar :). Go you xx

  2. Hi Donna! You are certainly off and running for January and loved your photos. I use a paper diary and my phone to keep up to date with what I’m doing as well as Mike’s appointments and Nan duties. Thanks for being an inspirational co-host of #WBOYC and can’t wait to read about your February. Life is good! Enjoy! xx

    1. Hi, Sue – I am glad that I am not the only one still using a paper diary. I find it great for sharing with Richard and since it’s on our fridge – it is a steady reminder. Thank you for your kind words. I am off to read your post now. See you there!

  3. I use two calendars. One is a datebook from Franklin Covey and the other is a wall calendar. The first is for personal things, the other is for bloggy things. I’m old school all the way when it comes to planning.

    1. Hi, Ally – I honestly didn’t release that there were still so many paper calendar users. I suddenly feel much less alone! 😀 I had a Franklin Covey DayPlanner when I was working – but have had much less to plan in retirement so sadly didn’t continue with it.

      1. In truth I keep with the Franklin Covey planner because I love my green leather binder. It’s pretty and I’m shallow enough to want it with me still. I feel effective when I use it. 😉

  4. I’m almost religious about using my phone calendar, but also use a paper planner for things that involve/affect my husband. I even use it for some of my chores, then smile a big smile when I get to delete it from the day. We just got back from 10 days in Hawaii, so back to the chores!

    1. Hi, Tracey – Thank you so much for stopping by. I recognize that joyous feeling of crossing off a chore or a big task from your list. This past month, I have been following the Yoga with Adrienne Challenge. I do my practice first thing each morning and then delete it from my list the second after it is completed. Insert ‘Huge Smile of Accomplishment’ here! 😀

  5. Hi, Donna,
When it comes to calendars (yours vs. mine) you win by a large margin, but looking over yours was a lot of fun. Thanks for being an SPCA volunteer. I use a calendar on my phone almost exclusively and supplement it with a Reminder app.
Unforeseen events have taken a toll on my blogging time, but I look forward to returning to it when we leave for the west coast next week. Please check it out—I need clicks. Have a great weekend! Joe

    1. Hi, Deborah – It is wonderful to hear from you. I’m pretty sure that I got the term “Pocket WOTY” from Sue at Women Living Well After 50. I had planned to have a private WOTY this year and loved the term “Pocket WOTY” so instantly ran with that. Thank you for linking up with us. I am off to check out your post now. See you there!

  7. So, that’s why you took a picture of our group 🙂 !

Team paper calendar here. Since hubby and I either share activities or need to be aware of what the other is doing/planning, etc. so we can be sure not to have scheduling conflicts (not to mention that I need to remind him of appointments sometimes 🙂 ), it’s just so much easier to keep the calendar in a central location. I haven’t yet figured out the benefit of having a digital calendar.

    Like

    1. Hi, Janis – According to Google (yeah, I checked), the advantages of using a Digital Calendar include:
      • Setting up alerts and reminders.
      • Connecting to other mobile devices for easy access to your calendar.
      • Adding useful attachments and links to enhance scheduled events.
This seems to assume that you want physical alerts, are happy to share your calendar with other mobile devices and find attachments to your calendar useful.
I do use a digital calendar on my phone, but must confess that I seldom (if ever) have used any of the above.

Yup, that’s one of the reasons why I took our group photo on Tuesday. I thought that it turned out great! 😀
I hope that your travel plans continue to go well.

  8. What a wonderful first WBOYC post, Donna, and setting the tone and a great example for us who will hop into the challenge. Although I use my Outlook online calendar, we keep a few hanging around the house for the images and so hubby knows what’s going on! You have a great balance of family and activities. Thanks for the image BYW! See you Sunday!

  9. I’m happy you had some time with your mother, Donna. My days are filled with helping my parents and squeezing in writing when time allows. My calendar is packed with appointments and deadlines. I use an A-5 coiled notebook planner and lots of Post-its!

    1. Hi, Jill – I like using post-its too. They are so flexible and convenient. And I love the fun colours!
I hope that all is well with your parents. It is wonderful that you are close-by to help. I am sure that they are incredibly grateful for that.
My mom and stepfather live a good 8 hours away. I try to visit every couple of months and I speak to them by phone most nights. I am very thankful for the time that we have together.

  10. I use a daytimer; it’s usually open on the island. Besides appointments, I keep lists & notes in it – menus, books read/to read, music to listen to. My neighbor once asked why I was keeping a daytimer in retirement. ‘Cause I have things to do even in retirement! This month I needed it to keep track of social engagements – 2 suppers at friends; friends in x 2 for suppers; 1 brunch here awa 2 lunches; 2 coffee dates with friends. Sometimes I surprise myself. I recovered from the Christmas festivities and put Christmas to rest for another year. I babysat the little 19 mo old neighbor 3 times this month. I walked a total of 15 mi this month including a moonlight walk on J6. I start house checking for a neighbor next week. The to-do list at the rental property has been checked off. In an effort to eat down the freezer I made saskatoon tarts & a pie. I started the Yellowstone series & watched Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. And I’m still reading Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything! And then there’s all the day-to-day that goes without mentioning.

    1. Hi, Mona – Your January sounds wonderful – very busy and active! I love all the types of things that you record in your planner. My calendar usually has just the bullet point version of key events coming up. But my never ending sticky notes on my computer contain random bits and bobs of my thoughts on current books I am reading, recipe ideas, workout lists, recent addresses that I needed to look up, etc, etc. So I am more digital than I originally realized! 😀
I’m totally with you on having “things to do in retirement.” I wouldn’t want it any other way.
I’m thinking that Bryson’s Short History on Nearly Everything may actually be a Long History. At over 540 pages a Long History is probably more accurate!

      1. Hi, Laurie – That sounds awesome. A Word Cloud Tip: If you are using Word Cloud for a particular purpose (other than just self-discovery), you can go through the word list and delete any words that have crept in that don’t serve your theme. You can also increase the value of any words . And of course you can choose your own colours and shape instead of letting Word Cloud randomly select them for you — which it is very happy to do). Good luck!

  11. Add me to the list of paper calendar users. Mine is also on the fridge … but a 2nd one is on the wall over my desk. Keeping the two in synch has sometimes been a challenge that resulted in double bookings, but for the most part, it works well for me. So it’s definitely old school for me 🙂 There is just something about that visual month at a glance!

  12. Are readers now scrutinizing your word cloud and trying guesses at what your WOTY is? Workout, maybe?

I don’t have a calendar at all. Well, my iPad has a digital calendar, but every month is totally empty. Unless I visit Massachusetts (doctor’s appointments) or Belgium (friend and family appointments). Based on my calendar, I live a very boring life. 🙂

    Like

    1. Hi, Liesbet – Sadly, my WOTY is not exciting enough to warrant any efforts of scrutinizing.
That is very inspiring that you do not use a calendar at all. Especially since you lead FAR from a boring life. Speaking of which, I am super excited to read your upcoming adventures!

  13. I have to use an electronic calendar so that I can coordinate it with my business booking calendar, which clients have access to. They have to be able to see where I have open spots throughout the month.

The hilarious thing is that I had to start calendaring in “shower” on a daily basis because clients kept booking right after my morning workouts and I’d show up for virtual meetings looking like a drowned rat. Now I actually have time to shower and look more presentable! 😀

    1. Hi, Glory – Thank you so much for commenting — and for the evening giggle.
That is totally understandable that you use a digital calendar for work. I used one when I worked for similar reasons. That is so funny about the shower! I am still smiling about that! 😀

  14. Hi Donna, oh I love the wordcloud thingy! I must give it a try! As for my calendar – I put it all in my phone calendar with alerts and reminders galore! lol I forgot stuff all the time otherwise. I do Yoga and Pilates every day too – in the mornings. I use an app by some Aussie sisters ‘They MerryMaker Sisters’. I’ve actually met them both at a blogging conference (they started out as bloggers). The app is “MerryBody Online Studio’. I love it! I’ve also got into the daily practice of spending 20 minutes lying on an acupressure mat listening to a savasana meditation. The meditation is blissful and the mat gets rid of any niggling pain I have. Love it! Thanks for hosting and I will try my best to link up each month. xo

    1. Hi, Min – Thank you for letting my know about the Merry Sisters. I will check them out. When I first retired, I joined regular yoga practices at our local studio. Since the pandemic, I have done my workouts at home, focussing mostly on strength and cardio. This 30-Day Yoga Challenge has reminded me that some positions that I feel should be easy (read here: downward facing dog) are the opposite for me, while other poses that often challenge others (tree and side plank for example) are fine for me (at least currently). It’s strange how this all works.
I’ve never heard of an accupressure mat before. It sounds quite wonderful!

  15. We have a very good fridge calendar with large squares for writing in. The past 5 years I have used this one brand and get it sent to me by the publisher. I go through the calendar with different colour markers for events such as birthdays and then, as appointments etc come up for me or B, they get a circle around them in ‘our colour’, Yes I am pink and he is blue. I am the sole organiser and I think it helps to have one as long as the other one (him!) doesn’t mind. For convenience, I also used my iphone calendar and it is set up in colours and groups of purpose. Can you tell I was a teacher?? I loved reading your post…and I still enjoy playing with apps like a word cloud. Thanks to you and your link up co-hosts! I will be back at the end of February!

Your fridge calendar sounds very impressive. Ours is pretty simple — depending on this month. Lucky for me (and the appearance of this post), January was fairly straightforward. But December was a crossed out, crossed over, scribbled in mess. Our sons kept changing their Christmas dates. I definitely needed a larger calendar for that month!

I.ve tried using it in conjunction with a desk diary but tend to over complicate thing. Keeping it simple works best for me. Having said that I do have a diary for blogging.

    1. Hi, Jennifer – You are the second person to mention a planner for blogging. I never thought of using one before. Since I am part of three blogging linkups, I do have those publication dates listed on my monthly calendar but that’s as far as I’ve gone. Since I did mess up the publication date of my last What’s On Your Bookshelf post, a bit more planning on my part is likely in order. Thank you for the tip!

  18. Hi Donna, I use a plain paper calendar and write on it. The thing about the calendar that everyone finds hilarious is that I keep it in my bathroom. But, I find that very handy for planning my day since it is the first thing I see in the morning. This is the first time I have seen word cloud. 21. Donna, thanks for the link to the wordcloud tool… I’m hoping to try it with my January posts…. to see what it say’s about my start to the year (which I feel has been a rough start). Oh, I use an on-line calendar that is for everyone in the family (my mom is now in there), and a weekly hand-written one, which allows me to put in to-do or reminders on certain days. What drives hubby crazy about the on-line one is I’ll put “possibilities” on there with a “?” on the thing. But those allow me to decide in the moment on some things.

    Like

    1. Hi, Pat – I love including ‘possibilities’ in our calendars. Otherwise, it is too easy for these hopes/ideas to slip away. I also love that your whole family is on your digital calendar, including your mom. I keep track of my mom’s medical appointments for her with phone call reminders to her. She says that I am the best secretary that she could ever ask for! ❤

  31. I loved the different ways you shared your January calendar with us, Donna. To answer your question, I primarily use the Outlook calendar on my iPhone, but my husband and I also have a large annual write-in calendar in our kitchen, so we can keep track of joint or overlapping commitments. I also like that I can see the weeks or months ahead at a glance. We just returned from Mazatlan, so that was our big happening in January. I also completed the Yoga with Adriene challenge just today. It turned out to be the perfect daily workout while we were traveling.

We have one of those, plus a digital one for my husband, plus a HUGE erasable wall calendar that is slowly becoming unnecessary now that we are almost empty nesters. Boy that thing was once so necessary to keep track of the kids’s activities. That will come down soon when we re-do our kitchen. I didn’t know you have 4 sons – just like us! Well we’re on to February – see you out there! – Barb

    1. Thanks, Barb – Like you, our family calendar has changed significantly over time. Book Clubs do tend to dominate my current calendar. But, if we recorded all of my husband’s tee-times with other golfers, that would take up much more space than my book clubs. Yup, that’s my key defense and I am sticking with it! 😀 I hope that all is well for you.
